    (COLUMBUS, May 10, 2013) – Most of us file and pay our taxes each year, and that’s the only time we’ll have any interaction with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, statistics from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration show that last year, 1.48 million taxpayers were invited to spend a little extra quality time with the IRS because they underwent an individual audit. While being selected for audit by the IRS can be nerve racking, experts say keeping calm and carrying on will help you navigate an audit.

  • Seven smart tips for last-minute filers

    In the wake of the fiscal cliff negotiations, the Internal Revenue Service delayed the start of tax filing season until January 30 of this year. Some taxpayers faced further delays in filing, however, including those who claimed residential energy credits or whose returns involved property depreciation or general business credits. With or without delays, there are always those who end up filing their taxes at the last minute. The Ohio Society of CPAs offers these tips for people who are scrambling to get their returns in by the April deadline.

  • CPAs seeking minority accounting majors for free two-day leadership workshop

    The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA) and The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) seek to diversify the accounting profession by encouraging more minority college students to major in accounting and earn the CPA credential. The two organizations have teamed up on a program to prepare minority students to enter the CPA profession. Applications are being accepted through April 1.

  • Ohio CPAs to prepare tax returns free of charge for deployed troops

    The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA) is offering free tax preparation services to Ohio military families this tax season. From January through April, Ohio certified public accountants will prepare 2012 tax returns for military personnel who are permanent residents of Ohio and currently deployed outside of the state.
